    The Founders

There are three key founders of Mahindra. J. C. Mahindra was India's first Steel Controller. He held this position at a time when World War II was starting and steel production became an important part of the war effort. His brother, named K.C. Mahindra, was chairman of the Indian Coal Fields Committee of the Government of India and the Automobile and Tractor Panel. Malik Ghulam Muhammad was a financier who worked for the government. At first, the three founders called their company Mahindra & Muhammad. After Muhammad moved to Pakistan, the company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra.

    The Start

When the company began in 1945, steel production was needed for the war effort. At first, they created jeeps and made steel for vehicles at the end of the war.

In 1961, they partnered with International Harvester to create their first tractor. This first model was highly successful due to its innovative features and high durability. Later, UTVs were also added to the lineup. The collaboration with International Harvester helped Mahindra expand throughout the western world.
